Get into Genes - PCR
Curriculum link and background
Get into Genes - PCR has been developed to align with Unit 4 Biology, Area of Study 2. The workshop guides students through the latest molecular tools and techniques used in the analysis and manipulation of DNA. Additional student notes and teacher guide for School Assessed Coursework can be provided on request. The workshop provides the content and data required for ‘A report of a laboratory investigation’ given as one of the Assessment tasks for School Assessed Coursework (SAC) Outcome 2.
Following an introductory presentation, students rotate through four laboratory work stations, gaining experience of techniques such as restriction enzyme cutting, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis. Students get an overview of how technology has evolved from selective breeding through to genetic modification and genomic selection. This workshop highlights the application of biotechnology to facilitate improvements to dairy cattle and crop production in the Australian environment.
