Get into Genes - PCR
Get into Genes - PCR has been developed to align with Unit 4 Biology, Area of Study 2 of the VCE Biology Study Design. Additional student notes for School Assessed Coursework can be provided on request. The workshop provides the content and data required for ‘A report of a laboratory investigation’ given as one of the Assessment tasks for School Assessed Coursework (SAC) Outcome 2.
Following an introductory presentation, students rotate through four laboratory workstations, gaining experience of techniques such as the amplification of DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the use of enzymes including endonucleases (restriction enzymes), and various means of analysing PCR products including gel electrophoresis. This workshop highlights the application of molecular tools and techniques to facilitate improvements to dairy cattle and crop production in the Australian environment.
